Rain Garden Maintenance

Maintaining your rain garden – first year

  1. Water plants every few days for the first few weeks
  2. During a dry spell water at least once a week
  3. If is a wet time of year allow for drainage so your new plants don’t down drown or wash out
  4. Keep weeded
  5. Avoid using fertilizers

Maintenance – future years

  • In the spring, remove dead vegetation and excess leaves
  • In the spring, remove trash and sand collected over the winter
  • In the spring and during the summer months, remove weeds
  • During a dry spell water the equivalent of 1” of water once a week
  • Replace dead plants
  • Add mulch if needed
